The Dark Knight

While promoting his new movie Towelhead, Aaron Eckhart ruined a cliffhanger about the end of The Dark Knight and threw a bucket of cold water on those expecting director Christopher Nolan to direct a third Batman movie.

For the five of you who still haven't seen The Dark Knight, SPOILER ALERT:

Harvey Dent is dead, Aaron Eckhart insists, and he's not coming back for any potential sequels.

And Christopher Nolan might not be back either:

Ain't It Cool News: Eckhart: I think Heath was the one that was going to come back. And since he can't... (Pauses) You know, Chris hasn't said that he's going to make another one.

[Interviewer]: True. He's been on vacation. I spoke to David Goyer at Comic Con, and he said there have been no discussions.

Eckhart: (Smiling) He never said he's going to make another one. I'm sure they drove the Brinks truck up to his house and dumped money on his lawn. But I think Chris wants to go out and make other movies, too. And he should. He's an independent filmmaker at heart. He's got a lot of ideas.

It would seem that after the nearly $1 billion The Dark Knight made worldwide, Warner's going to make a third movie no matter what. But for the sake of the franchise, we hope they get Nolan to direct.

Network puts 'Universe' spinoff on 2009 launchpad

Sci Fi Channel isn't about to let down "Stargate" fans.

The network is set to announce the order of a new series from MGM Television, "Stargate: Universe," that will mark the third entry in Sci Fi's longest-running original series franchise.

Stargate Universe

The green light comes on the heels of Sci Fi's confirming Thursday that "Stargate: Atlantis" will not receive a sixth-season order. The "Universe" pickup ensures the continuation of the popular "Stargate" franchise, which has been on the air in various incarnations since 1997.

"Universe" will premiere as a two-hour movie early next year and will assume a regular hourly slot in the summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of "Stargate: SG-1" and "Atlantis," will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

The new show will involve more space-based action than "SG-1" or "Atlantis." With the "Star Trek" television franchise having folded in 2005 and Sci Fi's "Battlestar Galactica" airing its final episodes next year, the network hopes "Universe" will become sci-fi fans' new favorite space-travel series.

"We've had great success with 'Enterprise' repeats on Monday night, and there's an appetite for space opera as 'Battlestar' goes away," Sci Fi president Dave Howe said. "There's an opportunity to keep the space opera as part of our programming strategy."

"Universe" introduces a team of explorers who find an ancient unmanned ship called the Destiny. Unable to return to Earth, the crew must fend for themselves aboard the ship, which has a preprogramd mission taking them to the far reaches of the universe.

The series will employ a new cast of characters, with the network seeking a known performer for one lead role and fresh faces to play the rest of the ship's crew. Appearances by former cast members from "SG-1" and "Atlantis" are very possible.

Howe said the new series will reinvigorate the franchise by targeting a younger audience.

"This is an opportunity to reinvent this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation," Howe said. "We really don't want to be more of the same. It's going to build clearly off the existing franchise but with a cast that gives it a younger vibe."

Said co-creators Wright and Cooper: "In 'Universe,' we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humor, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home. Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping-off point for telling stories."

Also on Thursday, Sci Fi announced an order for a two-hour "Atlantis" movie in lieu of a sixth-season order. Airing two-hour movies of such franchises as "Stargate" and "Galactica" and quickly releasing the films as stand-alone DVDs has been a successful strategy for the network. But the news depressed "Stargate" fans that the long-running sci-fi television franchise, like "Star Trek" a few years back, was going to be retired as a weekly series.

"SG-1" ran for 10 seasons, launching on Showtime in 1997 then moving to Sci Fi after its fifth season. The spinoff "Atlantis" premiered in 2004 and will mark its 100th episode this year. Friday night airings of "Atlantis" have averaged more than 2 million viewers per episode.

Sci Fi has not yet made a decision which new project might serve as a companion for "Universe" next summer. The network has three pilots under consideration, including the terrestrial-bound "Battlestar Galactica" prequel "Caprica."

Starship Troopers 3: Marauder

Release Date:
29 September 2008 (UK)

Synopsis:
"The war against the Bugs continues! A Federation starship crash-lands on the distant alien planet OM-1, stranding beloved leader Sky Marshal Anoke and several others, including comely but tough pilot Lola Beck. It's up to Colonel Johnny Rico, reluctant hero of the original Bug Invasion on Planet P, to lead a team of Troopers on a daring rescue mission."

I am a huge fan of the first Starship Troopers movie; it's an excellent film with good story, great characters and impressive special effects, the second movie; Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation was a very low budget production and was a huge let down for all Starship Troopers fans.

I've been looking forward to Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (even though it's a low budget, straight to DVD release) as it sees the return of Casper Van Dien as Colonel Johnny Rico and also stars the beautiful Jolene Blalock as Captain Lola Beck.

I really had my hopes up for this movie; I knew that it wouldn't, nor couldn't be as good as Starship Troopers but it stood a good chance of restoring its name and making up for the second film.

After watching the film I'm dissapointed that it was a low budget movie and the effects have suffered because of this, in some parts they look pretty good and in others they're pretty awful but you can easily put up with them; the acting however is quite bad throughout the film and gets annoying at times.

I'm not a big fan of the new costumes as they look cheaper and a little rushed compared to the originals and the new weapons are too big and look a little silly compared to the original and excellent looking Morita.

The direction is pretty good and follows the first movie quite well with the Federal Network advertisements and news stories scattered throughout the movie but in places, again due to the low budget and short number of actors and extras; the scenes are too small and don't give the feel of the epic battle that is supposed to be happening around you.

The story isn't exactly a bad one overall but it's no masterpiece either, parts of the story are a bit cheesy and some I'd say  are down right stupid, I'm not going to get into it or include any spoilers here but I do feel that it could have been a lot better.

This may read as though I'm really slating this film when I'm not; I'm comparing it to the original which this could never live up to I suppose and I'm dissapointed that it's not quite as good as it could or should have been but overall it's not a terrible film and in some way does make up for the downright awful SST2 film.

Overall, though stunted in places and with a little wooden acting here and there it's quite an enjoyable film and is worth checking out!
