I thought I'd copy this over from my blog to show you my SE Boba Fett costume progress.

Here's the first version of my SE Boba Fett costume:

Since getting the costume I needed to replace the helmet, boots and make a few more modifications; it was also clear that the costume needed a lot of weathering to make it much more screen accurate so I set about creating my SE Boba Fett v2.0:

Bobamaker Helmet - Friday, 4 May 2007

I'm really concentrating on getting my Boba costume as good as I possibly can, I managed to get a great base-costume from a friend a while back but really wanted to upgrade a few things.

Overall the existing costume is pretty excellent but the previous owner wouldn't part with his very nice MLC lid so I got his modified '95 Don Post with the costume; this was very well done but just not up to the standard I wanted for my dream costume.

Recently I talked to Bobamaker (Daz) about getting him to make and fully paint an ESB lid for me; which I am still awaiting delivery of - early this week I was given the opportunity to buy another ESB Bobamaker, fully painted by Daz (basically exactly what I have on order) for a very good price which I couldn't resist.

I just had to get some decent pictures of this helmet as sitting it on my desk didn't show the detail enough so I got it in our studio and took some quick pictures.

The helmet is absolutely beautiful; the pictures really don't do this helmet justice it's extremely well detailed and looks stunning - here's some more detailed pictures:

As you can see Daz does excellent work not only on the modelling of his props but also on the paintwork and presentation - I couldn't have hoped to do anywhere near as good a job on the paintwork and am really happy I decided to get him to paint it for me (and happy I will now have 2 of them!).

Other upgrades

Also this week I took delivery of my new girth belt which I plan to dull-down a little.

The other upgrade I am waiting for is my pair of Fett boots from caboots.com; (as my current boots are modified Stormtrooper boots) they're supposed to be arriving in the next week or so and will then need weathering and the toe spikes fitting to them.

There's nothing else that really needs replacing now but I do plan to get some Bobamaker gloves (as they're excellent) and replace the Wookie braids as they've become quite fuzzy from getting stuck to the velcro.

I'm really happy with the way my Fett is coming along now and can't wait for my next troop!

Update: Weathering Boba (Part 1) - Thursday, 10 May 2007

As part of getting Boba up to scratch I really needed to do some weathering of the armour, although it has battle damage it was all just too clean.

Take this shoulder for example, yes it has the damage but look how clean it is - that had to change!

I started weathering the shoulders using a sponge and some Games Workshop's Citadel Color: "Chaos Black" paint, dabbing light amounts on and off again to get a nice dirty look.

I also used some dry cotton wool to dab and wipe off parts of the weathering.

I then used the paint to add the black marks as seen on the screen used costume:

After doing the shoulders I started work on the chest armour using the same techniques:

The weathering isn't finished yet as I need to dull down more of the armour but much more lightly than I have done on the really dark parts here to blend it all in, this will make the weathering look more natural - I'll post up some more pictures when the weathering's finished.

After I have completed weathering the armour sections I will make a start on weathering the soft parts of the costume as the flight suit is also far too clean.

Update

I've done a little more work on the chest armour:

I added a little more to the shoulders (which are now finished) as well:

For this I used a piece of damp cotton wool lightly brushed with the same "Chaos Black" paint and a piece of dry cotton wool to dab off and wipe away parts of the weathering.

I now need to add a little wear to the weathering on the chest armour to blend it in better - but it's getting there.

Update: Weathering Boba (Part 2) - Friday, 18 May 2007

Weathering has continued on my Boba Fett costume over the past week when I have had time and the armour is almost done now.

As you can see the gauntlets were already dulled down a little:

I just added more and darker weathering to them, following the reference pictures I have to make them look good and dirty:

I also finished the weathering of my codpiece and added the extra battle damage, I used the same techniques as I did on my chest and shoulder armour detailwed in my previous post.

Update: Weathering Boba (Part 3) - Wednesday, 30 May 2007

My airbrush and compressor arrived today so I started work on my boots, here's how they were new:

I started the weathering by mixing the Chaos Black Games Workshop paint with a little water and using the airbrush to cover the shoes making them darker grey.

I then created a new mix with less water to really darken areas that should look like they have more dirt and wear on them and to blend in the rest of the weathering.

I finished off by mixing some Space Wolves Grey paint and a little water to spray the black areas.

I'm not finished with the weathering on these yet though; I'm going to let them dry off and have another look at them as it all still needs blending better!

Weathering Boba (Part 4) & new gloves! - Monday, 4 June 2007

My Bobamaker gloves arrived today; they're just as good as I expected them to be and already have been lightly weathered. These are far better than what I had before and are also much more comfortable to wear!

This kickstarted me into gear to get on with weathering the soft parts of the costume.

I started with the separate pouches applying a spray of game's Workshop "Beastial Brown" mixed with water and later darkened with a light mix of "Chaos Black" and water:

With these now looking pretty good I started work on the flightsuit and the flak jacket using the same process (these images make the suit look much heavier weathered than they are because of the crap lighting).

I weathered around the pouches and pockets more heavily as this gives the suit a more "used" look as these areas always receive more wear and grime when worn.

The suit is almost there now, I am just waiting on new aluminium toe spikes for my boots and then the costume is pretty much complete bar a few last minute tweaks and additions.

Toe Spikes & Knee Launchers - Thursday, 14 June 2007

My new toe spikes and knee dart launchers have arrived!

This is part of my campaign to get all metal parts where needed for my new ESB Fett to make it as screen accurate as possible but as the boots are the only part that will be shared between the two costumes here they are:

Toe spikes:
First of all they needed to be bent into shape to fit the boots properly, the top one is how they arrived and the bottom is how I bent them into shape - notice the tighter bend on one side to perfectly fit the contour of the boot toe:

Once both spikes had been bent they were attached to the boots:

I fitted the spikes just above the base of the sole (along the join of the grip part of the sole) to help prevent them hitting the ground and being prised upwards when walking

Then it was onto the weathering; I looked at my reference pictures for how these had been weathered and proceeded to once more use my trusty old Games Workshop "Bestial Brown" and "Chaos Black" paints.

First I over-applied some of the brown:

And then added the black and rubbed them down in places to simulate the wear (which is why I over-applied the paints) and later applied a very thin wash of black mixed with water to further dull down the shiney metal:

The colour in the pics makes the brown areas look more orange; the look is really more of a good rust colour like on the screen used boots though.

So, the upgrades are almost done and the v2.0 is almost there, this pic shows the updated SE Boba Fett but I still need to repaint the gauntlets as they're too bright at the moment:

Once I've completed the gauntlets I'll get some better pictures taken of the finished v2.0 costume wink.gif

I've also just taken delivery of my new and impossible to get hold of Hyperfirm EE-3 blaster (pics to follow) thumbs.gif
